This series has been recommended to me by more people than any other, and I’ve tried. I really have, several times. Once, I nearly made it through a whole episode before changing the channel in disgust.
From what I could tell, the show is about a bunch of servants who care more about their lords and ladies than they care about themselves and live to cater to their every whim. Oh, and these lords and ladies are just chock-full of whims.
Even worse, these servants seem to create their own class system of snobbery based on their oppressors’ social model within their own ranks! They spend their days attempting to outdo one another to earn most-favored- by- the- boss status.
So, let me get this straight. Landowners, who’ve inherited land seized land by force, exploit those who don’t have any for cheap labor to do all their work for them, and spend all their time shopping, thinking up new snobbery competitions and calling themselves “civilized”. The non-landowning peasants are forced into servitude, polishing silver, scrubbing floors, shoveling horse-poop, and emptying chamber-pots.
I just can’t understand why people find the gossip, deception and backbiting that ensue as the result of everyone jockeying for position in this exploitive situation so highly entertaining. Can anybody out there give me a logical explanation for the popularity of this series?
